NW INTERVIEW
She didnt just win the inaugural American Idol crown in 2002, Kelly Clarkson went on to conquer the world-her two huge hit albums, Thankful and Breakaway, inspired rave reviews and won her Grammy awards. But recent rumours of fights with her label over her self penned third album, My December, plus constant gossip about her fluctuating weight and the state of her love life must be taking their toll on the singer right? Wrong, says the 25 year old as she chats with NW about the downsides of fame and fortune.
Youve described making My December as free therapy.....
Oh definately. I dont have a filter, I just literally write whats coming straight out of my head and heart. I've written songs on every album (before) but My December is the entire thing-and thats why its more intimate and a little more raw, I guess. The record is actually very much about me, which is kind of selfish, but thats basically what its about.
How would you describe where you are now in your life?
I'm extremely happy....I'm figuring things out, not just with my life but with my work as well. Like "How do you spread things out and keep things fresh?" Everything is going really well.
Are guys intimidated by your sucess?
Yeah, definitley. I get that. Even my boyfriends have been like "Oh my god, I didnt ask you out (for) forever!" I am not very intimidating. I'm very welcoming, but I think being who I am in the public eye, its intimidating. But I'm actually pretty down to earth.
So if a guy wanted to get your attention, whats the best thing he could do?
Make me laugh.
As a celebrity, is it easier to go out with another celebrity?
I've never dated a celebrity. Its not like I'm saying, "No, I'm never going to" because you never know. But I have enough spotlight, theres already enough attention on me all the time, so definitley dont want another one. No, I date normal guys.
We gather you're single now?
I'm not in a relationship most of the time, because I am a workaholic. Usually people dont like dating workaholics. (Laughs)
Are you an over achiever?
Definitley. And I love it, I'm not stressed about it. I love working.
Before you were famous which celebrity did you have a crush on?
Probably Steven Tyler (from Aerosmith) I was in love with Steven Tyler when I was a kid.
Whats the best thing about being in love?
Its that rush of adrenaline in the beginning of a relationship. But I've never been in love really. I've loved people, but I've never been seriously in love.
How do you know?
I have just never been in love like that. I've never wanted to spend my life with anyone-yet.
You're too young for that anyway.
Thankyou!
Would you rather go on a romantic trip to Paris or a trek through Nepal with essentials only?
Oh, essentials only in Nepal. I think Paris is beautiful but, like I said, I'm not romantic with anyone yet, so its not real fun for me. (laughs) I'd rather do the bare-essentials roaming around.
What makes a person sexy?
Confidence, I think.
Are you usually the dumper or the dumped when it comes to ending a relationship with someone?
I hate to say this, but I'm usually the dumper. Its never usually a bad thing, everyone usually knows its coming. Its (usually because) it just didnt work out.
Do you give them a hint?
Well, you know from me, I'm an open book. You'll know exactly how I'm feeling and when.
Thats got to get you in a lot of trouble.
It does, yeah. Thats why I'm single (laughs.)
We hear you don't like being referred to as the girl next door?
No, its not that-I just dont want to be put on some pedestal of being perfect, because I'm not. And whats 'the girl next door'? It depends on where you live. I'm very down to earth, I'm very talkative. I'm very friendly, I guess, if thats what it means.
How have you avoided becoming a diva?
I don't live in LA, I live in Texas, and I have the same friends I have had since I was a kid. And I work so much theres not a lot of time to do damage or stupid stuff. I'm not really into the fame thing either. I like singing and I like writing and performing.
And wearing underwear?
Now and then. I've got em on today (laughs).
What do you think of all the Hollywood 'it' girls such as Lindsay Lohan, Paris Hilton and Britney Spears getting into trouble this year?
I think its very different when you grow up in this industry. I didnt. I grew up normal. Whatever normal is, but I went to Proms and I went through my awkward junior high stage and (my childhood) wasnt through a microscope. So I really think its hard for them, much harder than it is for me, because I've had some normalcy and stability from a life thats not under a microscope. I honestly dont know, but I pray for those people all the time because I dont know how they handle it. And I especially think the whole key to being in this industry is surrounding yourself with good, normal people-not people who are going to say yes so they can stay on the gravy train.
You must have some of those yes-people around you?
I weed them out. One day, I was talking to a friend and I was like "Dude, its so hard sometimes. I dont want to be jaded, but I also dont want to blind myself to these people I let in my life because I am a nice person and they end up screwing you over" And she was like "Well everyone has to pick the weeds and keep the flowers". So thats why I wrote the song Sober. Its all about kind of surviving it. You have to surround yourself with good people. Not just in this business but everywhere or you're just going to hate life. And life is too short to be that miserable.
So Sober's not about an addiction to drugs or alcohol?
No, it's strictly a metaphor. Everybody has an addiction-it doesn't have to be alcohol or narcotics. You could be addicted to the wrong kind of man, or the wrong people in your life, or addicted to never taking chances. There's something you always fall back into-whatever's holding you back from being the ultimate you.
What's your addiction?
I'm addicted to seeing the good in people, which is not a bad addiction but it kicks my butt sometimes because I always see potential and sometimes people don't live up to that. I really get let down, but I don't want to be jaded. At the same time I don't want to be screwed over constantly.
You seem to be under constant public scrutiny lately about your fluctuating weight......
But isn't that normal for a girl? Society is so messed up. Women's bodies fluctuate all the time-I know plenty of girls in this industry exactly like me. But what's funny is we don't spend any time thinking about it, everyone else does. When I work alotI tend to lose wieght because I'm working so much. And when I'm on vacation, I'm drinking lots of wine and I'm having a good time with my family and friends, obviously I'll gain a couple of pounds. I think as long as you're happy in yourself, then you're good.
So you don't get upset about it?
No. I mean obviously I'm a normal girl and there are days when you think, "Oh, I need my big jeans" or "I want to wear a puffy shirt." (laughs.) But other people saying it doesn't get me down. I mean, it sucks, obviously, for me to concentrate on it but it doesn't make me sad or anything.
What does the world tend to get wrong about you?
I don't think they get anything wrong, really. I'm pretty vocal, I'm a strong individual, I'm very independent and everybody knows that. I'm pretty much the same person talking to you as I am when I'm with my friends.
